Procurement teams sourcing internationally deal with a stack of acronyms that all sound similar but serve different purposes. Here's what each document actually tells you, and what the common certifications do and don't guarantee.

COA - Certificate of Analysis

This is the document that tells you what's actually in the specific batch you're buying - purity percentage, moisture content, insoluble matter, and other tested parameters for that production lot. A COA should be batch-specific. A generic COA that looks identical across every order from a supplier, with no batch number or testing date tied to it, isn't really telling you anything about the material you're actually receiving. Ask specifically for the COA matching the batch or shipment being invoiced, not a template document.

TDS - Technical Data Sheet

This describes the general product - typical specifications, physical properties, recommended handling and storage conditions. Unlike a COA, it's not batch-specific; it's describing what the product is supposed to be in general. Useful for initial supplier evaluation and engineering reference, but it's not a substitute for batch-level verification when an actual shipment is on the way.

SDS - Safety Data Sheet

Covers hazard information, handling precautions, first aid measures, and regulatory classification. Required for import documentation in most markets and necessary for your own facility's safety compliance. Format requirements vary somewhat by region (GHS-aligned formats are increasingly standard globally, but specific sections and classifications can differ), so it's worth confirming your supplier's SDS matches your destination market's expected format rather than assuming a generic international version covers you.

REACH registration

REACH is the EU's chemical registration framework. A REACH-registered product means the substance has gone through the registration process required to be legally placed on the EU market in the relevant tonnage band. For EU supply, the importer and supplier must establish which REACH duties, registrations, exemptions and supply-chain arrangements apply; registration is a compliance question rather than proof of batch quality. If you're not importing into the EU, REACH registration is largely irrelevant to your purchase, though some buyers still treat it as a general signal of supplier organization and documentation practices.

ISO 9001 certification

This certifies that a manufacturer has a documented quality management system in place - consistent processes, record-keeping, and continuous improvement procedures. It's a certification about process consistency, not a guarantee about the specific chemical specification of any given batch. A ISO 9001-certified manufacturer is more likely to produce consistent, well-documented product batch to batch, but the certification itself doesn't specify purity or grade - that's still defined by the product spec and confirmed by the COA.

What this all means practically for a buyer

None of these documents individually guarantee you're getting what you paid for - they work together. TDS tells you what the product is supposed to be. COA confirms what a specific batch actually tested at. SDS covers the safety and regulatory side. Certifications like ISO 9001 or REACH speak to the supplier's process and market compliance rather than any single shipment's quality.

For a first order with a new supplier, it's reasonable to ask for all of these up front, along with recent COAs from actual shipments (not just the ones the supplier chooses to show you) if you want a sense of real batch-to-batch consistency before committing to volume.

Calcium chloride sometimes gets treated with more caution than it warrants because "chloride" and "chemical" in the name trigger more concern than the actual hazard profile justifies - it's a widely used, well-understood industrial salt with a long safety track record when handled with standard precautions. At the same time, "it's just salt" undersells the real handling considerations, particularly the heat generated during dissolution and the genuine eye irritation risk from dust or splash exposure. Neither extreme is accurate. Standard industrial hygiene practices, an SDS on hand at the point of use, and basic PPE cover the practical risk for the vast majority of handling scenarios.

If you're importing in bulk, confirm your supplier can provide an SDS formatted appropriately for your destination market's regulatory requirements (GHS classification format varies somewhat by region), and make sure whoever is receiving and handling the shipment at your facility has that documentation before the product arrives, not after.
