Buyer takeaway: Water softener salt is sodium chloride used to regenerate ion-exchange resin. The procurement decision is not a household brand choice: specify NaCl assay, insolubles, moisture, physical form, packing and the industrial regeneration duty.

1. Fix identity and intended duty

The chemical identity is sodium chloride, NaCl (CAS 7647-14-5). The commercial form may be tablet, pellet, compacted shape or granular salt. The core duty is brine preparation for ion-exchange resin regeneration in industrial and commercial water-treatment trains.

Do not assume that crude industrial salt, culinary salt or a consumer appliance brand is equivalent. The resin system cares about insolubles, contamination, dissolution and brine delivery.

4. Separate salt quality from plant operating settings

Salt specification can support clean brine preparation, but the plant owner sets brine strength, regeneration frequency, dose and run length from resin capacity, feed water and operating data. A supplier article should not invent one universal setting.

5. Compare total cost, not only bag price

6. First-order and receiving checks

Review a sample or recent COA, then inspect bags, seals, form breakage, lot number and documents on arrival. Store dry and protect from contamination. Record any fines, caking or dissolution problem by lot.

7. Prevent product confusion

  • Industrial salt may have a different insolubles and particle specification.
  • Salt-free conditioning is a different treatment approach and does not regenerate ion-exchange resin with NaCl.
  • SLS usually means sodium lauryl sulfate, a surfactant unrelated to softener salt.
