74% vs 94% Calcium Chloride: Compare Cost per Metric Tonne of CaCl2

Compare 74% and 94% calcium chloride using equal CaCl2 mass, batch assay and matched delivery costs. Worked examples explain dosing and price conversion.

Comparing 74% and 94% calcium chloride starts with one question: how much verified CaCl2 does each shipment deliver? A lower price per metric tonne of product can still mean a higher raw-material cost for the same CaCl2 mass. Once both specifications meet your process requirements, use the calculations below to compare calcium chloride supply options on a consistent basis.

1. Confirm the assay and net product weight

Here, 74% and 94% mean CaCl2 mass fractions of 0.74 and 0.94 in the product as received. They are assumptions for worked examples, not test results for a Hailei shipment. For purchasing decisions, use the agreed batch assay and its reporting basis.

A dry-basis result cannot simply be multiplied by wet product weight. Ask the laboratory or supplier to reconcile the bases first, especially where the drying method affects hydration. Our guide to calcium chloride COA, TDS and SDS documents explains the different roles of these records. Use net chemical weight excluding bags and pallets; one metric tonne equals 1,000 kg.

2. Calculate the product mass required

Product mass = required CaCl2 mass ÷ as-received CaCl2 mass fraction. For 100 kg of CaCl2, assuming no handling or process losses:

Assumed assayCalculationProduct required
74%100 ÷ 0.74135.14 kg
94%100 ÷ 0.94106.38 kg

The 94% product quantity is 78.72% of the 74% quantity, a reduction of approximately 21.28%. This is a mass comparison; it does not predict an equivalent improvement in deicing, drying or treatment performance.

For a theoretical 1,000 kg final mixture containing 20% CaCl2 by mass, the CaCl2 requirement is 200 kg. At 74%, use 270.27 kg of product and 729.73 kg of added water. At 94%, the figures are 212.77 kg and 787.23 kg. This balance ignores insoluble matter, evaporation and losses. Added water equals final mass minus product mass: do not subtract crystal water again. It is not a volume calculation or an operating procedure.

3. Convert price to cost per metric tonne of CaCl2

Let P be the comparable cost per net metric tonne of product in one currency, and w the verified as-received CaCl2 mass fraction. Then:

Raw-material cost per metric tonne of CaCl2 = P ÷ w.

Compare P74 ÷ 0.74 with P94 ÷ 0.94. With these nominal assays, the break-even relationship is P94 = P74 × 0.94 ÷ 0.74, or approximately P74 × 1.2703. Therefore, a 27.03% higher product price for 94% material gives the same calculated CaCl2 cost, provided both prices cover identical costs.

This ratio is not a market quotation. It excludes differences in dissolution energy, labour, storage, waste and process performance. Replace nominal assays with accepted batch values before committing an order.

4. Align delivery costs before ranking quotations

An FOB offer and a CIF offer cannot be ranked directly. CIF includes seller-arranged freight and insurance to the named destination port, as explained in the ICC Academy guide to CFR and CIF. It does not automatically represent delivery to your factory.

For a factory-delivered comparison, document the same destination, currency, net quantity and tax treatment. Reconcile freight, insurance, destination charges, import clearance, duties and inland transport without double counting. Record each quotation's named place or port and Incoterms edition. Use our bulk price and shipping guide to structure the commercial enquiry.

Keep operating costs separate and evidence-based. Calcium chloride solids release heat when dissolved, as documented in the OxyChem Calcium Chloride Handbook. Follow the supplied SDS and your approved mixing procedure rather than treating the mass balance as handling guidance.

5. Frequently asked questions

Can I simply reduce the dose by 20%?

No. Twenty is the difference in percentage points. For equal CaCl2 mass, multiply the original 74% product quantity by 0.74 ÷ 0.94, then validate the change in your process.

Does lower active cost make the grades interchangeable?

No. Confirm form, impurity limits and application requirements first. The calcium chloride buyer's guide provides broader specification context.

What should I send with a comparison request?

Send the application, required assay and basis, form, impurity limits, quantity, packing, destination and trade term. Request a specification-matched quotation from Hailei so the commercial comparison starts from clearly stated requirements.
